Evening Discourse on the Fourteenth Day of the Second Month, Year of Yisi (乙巳), as Ordained by Heavenly Mandate
Outward Reflection
Tonight marks the sacred birthdays of both the Daoist Patriarch and the Grandmaster of the Nine Heavens Mysterious Maiden—a truly auspicious occasion. Our veneration of the Grandmasters is not merely an act of respect, but an opportunity to understand the wisdom and teachings they have imparted.
The Daoist Patriarch’s philosophy emphasizes the application of wisdom, aligning with the natural principles of the Dao, maintaining the balance of yin and yang, and even reaching a state of governance through non-action (Wu Wei 無為而治). The True Dao he expounded is the fundamental essence of all things. Through life’s experiences, one can reflect upon their own shortcomings, cultivate virtue, eliminate negative habits and thoughts, and ultimately refine oneself. At its core, the Daoist path is about achieving inner and outer harmony, physical and mental balance, and ultimately attaining longevity and transcendence. Furthermore, the ability to navigate human affairs wisely is an essential lesson for every cultivator.
However, the Dao itself is formless; its understanding varies among individuals, as each person’s level of cultivation and depth of insight differs. Everything in existence embodies the duality of yin and yang, and this universal principle is something all cultivators must come to comprehend.
The Grandmaster of the Nine Heavens Mysterious Maiden is widely revered as the deity of wisdom, strategy, leadership, and Daoist teachings. Her legacy, known as the Wisdom of Kunmen (坤門, the Gate of Earthly Wisdom), not only guides people in overcoming life’s challenges but also symbolizes the balance of strength and gentleness in women’s wisdom and inner power.
The character “玄” (Xuan) signifies profound mystery and unfathomable Daoist wisdom. Because of this, the Nine Heavens Mysterious Maiden has long been venerated as a divine figure, offering guidance to wise women on how to orchestrate strategies and achieve victory from afar. Her most famous legend tells of how she assisted the Yellow Emperor (Huangdi) in defeating Chiyou. She not only taught Huangdi the art of warfare and strategy but also imparted the principles of benevolence, morality, and proper conduct, emphasizing that true cultivators must uphold the virtues of filial piety towards Heaven and Earth, as well as respect for one’s parents in order to receive the guidance of enlightened masters.
Additionally, the Grandmaster of the Nine Heavens Mysterious Maiden is both a messenger of divine destiny and a guide of wisdom. As followers of the Golden Treasury Path, we should take pride in this connection and remember: before establishing oneself in life, one must first master the wisdom of human affairs. When one’s personal cultivation is in place, the Grandmaster will naturally aid in overcoming obstacles and ensuring a smooth path in Daoist practice.
Inward Reflection
Today, every Kunmen (坤門) member is fulfilling their designated roles. While the palace may seem calm, there remain many responsibilities to be carried out. Each person should apply their strengths and work collaboratively to maintain order and efficiency in the temple’s operations.
The management of temple affairs is itself a test and application of wisdom. It is not merely about physical effort but also about strategic planning for long-term growth. When wisdom is applied correctly, everything falls into place smoothly. Through practice and refinement, one will eventually master these skills and elevate them to a higher level of wisdom, becoming a true professional cultivator.
To become a professional cultivator, one must adhere to standards and commit to consistent practice. A true cultivator does not simply preach Daoist principles while failing to embody them in daily life. Anyone can speak grand theories, but such empty words hold no real value. Cultivation is a process of continuous growth and evolution—if one remains stagnant, how can they expect others to engage in meaningful discussions about the Dao with them?
Keep enriching yourself. Expand your knowledge across various fields, broaden your wisdom, and widen your perspective. As your vision expands, so will your capacity to reach higher dimensions of understanding, allowing you to attain deeper Daoist insights and progress toward an even higher state of cultivation.
With reverence, we bow in gratitude for the Lord’s boundless grace.
